Kirklees Council agrees revised sports plans
Revised design options for a new sports centre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, have been given the green light by Kirklees Council.
Government funding cuts have forced the local authority to make alterations to its plans in a bid to save £80m across its entire budget - including the sports centre scheme. The new facility is proposed for the town's Spring Grove car park and will replace an out-dated complex at Southgate.
Among savings totalling £900,000 to be agreed by Kirklees Council's cabinet is a change to the specification and design of the building in order to reduce construction costs. Squash facilities will be sited on the ground floor in an area previously earmarked for bowls, while a Health Zone will occupy a spare area on the first floor.
The new sports centre will include a leisure water facility with a flume and a sidewinder; a 25m swimming pool; a teaching pool; two sports halls; a fitness suite; and climbing and martial arts areas. Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan said: "We are committed to a new sports centre because it would be a real boost for Huddersfield, attract more visitors into the town centre and help people follow a healthy lifestyle.
"Despite the unprecedented financial picture, the council and its partners maintain a clear focus on the priorities which make a real difference to local people."
