Hackney Empire reopens after £17m redevelopment
East London theatre, the Hackney Empire, has reopened following an extensive £17m redevelopment.
The Grade II listed property was the centre of a three-year restoration fundraising campaign, led by the comedian Griff Rhys Jones.
Monies donated included an £8.8m cash injection from the Arts Council, a £1.3m donation from local-born businessman, Sir Alan Sugar and a Heritage Lottery Fund of £4.5m.
Hackney Empire, which first opened in 1901, narrowly escaped demolition in the 1980s. It was built by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, who was responsible for designing dozens of theatres in the early 1900s.
However, there remains one wing outstanding from the completed refurbishment, which Empire supporters are currently in the process of raising a separate £1m in funds to refit.
Speaking about the completion of the restoration and reopening of the Empire, its artistic director, Roland Muldoon, said: “It has been a great privilege to have been part of this project and to have witnessed the Empire’s magnificent transformation.
“The Empire remains dedicated to providing the wisest range of popular culture. In the coming months, we’ll bring to the stage prestigious companies from around the country and the world. Seasons will include the best of British drama, concerts, opera and ballet productions.” Details: www.hackneyempire.co.uk
