Green light for Hengistbury Head centre
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) has revealed that work on a new eco-friendly visitor centre at Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve can commence after funding was secured.
It is hoped that construction work will begin early next year after the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Landfill Communities Fund provided support for the development. Due to open to the public in spring 2013, the project will lead to an extension to the existing Barn Cottage using straw bales and a 'green' roof planted with grasses.
Facilities will include an exhibition area for archaeology, ecology and geology; community and education space; a retail outlet; and work areas for the centre's staff members. BBC cabinet member for economy, leisure and tourism Rod Cooper said: "More than one million people visit Hengistbury Head every year and it makes sense that we should have a dedicated visitor centre."
