GLL plans £5m refit of Merton leisure centres
Almost £5m is to be invested in local authority leisure facilities over the next two years in a bid to rival private fitness centres.
The London Borough of Merton, Greenwich Leisure (GLL) and Merton College are investing £4.5m in the refurbishment and redevelopment of Wimbledon Wellness Health and Fitness Centre, Morden Park Pool Wellness Health and Fitness Centre and Cannons Leisure Centre.
GLL took over the management of all council-operated leisure centres in the borough in 2000 and has spent more than £1m on their redevelopment to date.
This next phase of development will include upgrades to changing rooms and the addition of a sauna and steam facilities at the Wimbledon centre, new changing facilities and a sports hall at Modern Park Pool and the refurbishment of the fitness centre and changing facilities at Cannons.
Part of the investment will include substantial refurbishment of plant rooms, heating, ventilation, and water treatments.
“This investment will enable us to provide everyone in Merton with leisure facilities fit for the 21st century at a price everyone can afford,” said Mark Sesnan, managing director of GLL.
“Residents in the borough will be able to enjoy state of the art facilities, which rival those of private fitness centres,”
