GLL and Lewisham Celebrate 2011 Sports Awards
Lewisham Council invited hundreds of the borough's athletes to the Lewisham Sports Awards held in partnership with the GLL on 17 February at the Broadway Theatre, in celebration of their sporting achievements in 2010.
Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Alan Smith, presented the awards on the night and a number of awards were also handed out by special guest, Phillips Idowu, the reigning World Champion triple-jumper.
The Mayor said: "Congratulations to all the award winners for their brilliant sporting achievements throughout the year.
"Sport teaches us to aspire to perform to the best of our abilities, something which carries across all aspects of our lives. With the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games just over a year away, it's inspiring that we have so many talented sports people in Lewisham all of whom show such determination and commitment."
Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL commented, "GLL is delighted to have sponsored the 2011 Lewisham Sport Awards. As a charitable Social Enterprise and London's largest leisure operator, we are committed to supporting sporting excellence at grass roots level. These awards are a testament to the fantastic talent and commitment shown by those living and working within Lewisham.
"This is the ninth annual ceremony and those awarded included the borough's successful, such as Conrad Williams, Silver medallist in the 4x400m relay in the European Championships. Conrad was awarded the title of Lewisham Sportsman of the Year for his achievements.
