Deeside centre to receive £4m facelift
Flintshire County Council (FCC) has appointed Alliance Leisure to manage a £4m redevelopment of Deeside Leisure Centre.
Work at the centre will include the creation of an 80-station family fitness zone through the conversion of an old first floor nightclub.
The gym will boast free weights, Technogym resistance and cardiovascular equipment, along with two studios and new changing rooms.
There will also be a Shapemaster Feel Good Factory toning salon, featuring both Powertone tables and Easytone chairs.
The new gym will form the second phase of the three-phase redevelopment of Deeside Leisure Centre.
The first phase, due to be completed by October 2010, includes the creation of six five-a-side, 3G football pitches, a roller hockey zone and a multi-use games area.
The third phase of the redevelopment will see the rejuvenation of the old ice rink.
In order to utilise the old ice rink, and continue to encourage footfall to the new one, an indoor extreme sports facility and a café will be created.
This will house a climbing wall, high ropes course and a skate park for boarding, inline skates and BMX bikes. There will also be a soft play zone for small children.
The revamp of the Deeside centre is part of a four-year deal which will see Alliance manage, design, build and fund redevelopment schemes at a number of FCC's leisure centres.
In total, Alliance is looking to spend up to £10m in revamping the centres.
Sarah Watts, managing director of Alliance Leisure said: "This is one of the first partnerships with a council that establishes a long term contract.
"The first redevelopment at Deeside Leisure Centre will transform the facility into a hub of activity for the community."
Councillor Dennis Hutchinson, executive member for leisure at FCC, said: "We are currently assessing all of our facilities in order to provide first class amenities for the area.
"With this in mind it was decided that we should employ the services of one company in order to maximise revenue potential and obtain the best value for money across all of the redevelopments."
Alliance Leisure is part of the PTE group of companies, which includes Physique, ZigZag and Home Fitness Direct.
