Curves plans massive expansion into UK fitness market
Curves for Women, the women-only fitness chain with over 7,000 franchise locations across the US, Canada, Spain, Mexico, Portugal and Italy, plans to have 50 to 60 sites in the UK by early 2004.
The first Curves club opened in the UK in June 2002 and there are currently 16 clubs open with 36 more under contract to open in the next six months.
“We like to enter a new market very low key,” said Jim Johnson, sales director for Curves UK and Ireland, “then expand massively.
“We intend to be the same force in the UK as we are in the US and Canada and are aiming to open between 1,000 and 1,200 sites.”
The company has also opened two sites in the Republic of Ireland with a third opening in September and a further 32 under contract.
Curves sites are typically just 1,000sq ft and feature 16 stations – eight pieces of equipment and eight aerobic recovery stations – for its 30-minute workout programmes.
