Council secures university sports agreement
Members of the public will be able to use Northumbria University's new £30m indoor sports facility after Newcastle City Council (NCC) secured a deal with the institution.
A Community Use Agreement will reaffirm the partnership between the City of Newcastle Amateur Swimming Club and the university, providing public access to the six-lane, 25m pool at Sport Central. The new sports complex - due to open this summer - will provide sports science, training, development and competition facilities for sports including netball, volleyball and golf.
A 3,000-seat arena, a climbing wall, a 40m sprint track and a 750sq m (8,073sq ft) fitness suite will also be on offer at the venue, as well as three squash courts. NCC head of leisure services Tony McKenna said: "We are working very closely with Northumbria University on a range of issues to improve sporting provision in the city and this partnership is taking sporting opportunities in our city to a new level."
