Council plans to breathe new life into Seaton Carew
Hartlepool Council has revealed the results of its Seaton Carew Tourism Strategy, identifying eight specific themes which it aims to tackle to improve the resort’s declining visitor numbers.
Raising Seaton Carew’s beach standards, improving its accessibility, encouraging new attractions, enhancing the environment, improving overall image, encouraging new events, supporting businesses and improving the town’s visitor accommodation were all seen as pivotal issues to incorporate in the new strategy.
Stuart Drummond, mayor of Hartlepool, said: “The development and maintenance of a pleasant tourism environment at Seaton Carew is an essential factor not only in attracting visitors, but also in benefiting local residents, businesses and employees.
“The development of this strategy demonstrates a local commitment to achieving positive goals – not only for Seaton Carew – but to Hartlepool as a whole.”
The strategy follows lengthy consultation with the Seaton Carew Renewal Advisory Group that comprises local residents and community groups.
The strategy identified that at least £50,000 a year should be made available to provide a lifeguard on the beach, while £55,000 is needed to improve maintenance and cleaning of the beach and promenade.
Additionally, around £120,000 of funding is needed to improve access and safety to play park attractions.
The council is hoping to improve visitor numbers to the resort and its strategy is set to be completed by 2008. Details: www.hartlepool.gov.uk
