Colchester stadium in line for redevelopment

Colchester United Football Club's (CUFC) former Layer Road ground is to be redeveloped for residential purposes, after agreement between the council and Abbey Developments.
Contracts between the Hertfordshire-based developer at Colchester Borough Council (CBC) were exchanged on 27 June, which will enable the scheme to proceed. In a bid to recognise the history of the stadium site, however, part of the grassed area is to be retained and will form a central open space at the heart of the development.
CUFC left Layer Road for the £14m Weston Homes Community Stadium in 2008.
