Cardiff unveils sports village supercasino plans
Cardiff Council has unveiled its bid for the regional casino licence, claiming a supercasino in Wales' Cardiff Bay would boost the city’s International Sports Village (ISV) plans and ensure it was ready in time for the 2012 Olympics.
A spokesperson for the council said that if the government agreed to Cardiff as a site for a regional casino, it would bring forward large scale investment into the £700m ISV scheme, meaning that the site would be able to offer training facilities by 2010 as well as providing an international centre of sporting excellence for the future.
The ISV plans include 50m swimming pools; leisure pools; spa, health and fitness facilities; a snow box; a 4,000-seat multi-purpose arena; an ice pad; hotels; an entertainment complex and waterfront bars and restaurants.
It is anticipated the destination could see up to 4.5 million visitors per year and generate £190m annual spend.
Cardiff Council has also called for the government to allow more than one regional casino to be developed in the UK.
“We are calling on the government to reconsider its position and increase the number of regional casinos that may be licensed, to enable an assessment of the benefits they can bring to key regeneration initiatives throughout the country,” said council leader, Rodney Berman.
