2013 Seahaven Para Games confirmed a success again

Sunday 19th August saw the Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford played host to the third annual Seahaven Para Games, with participants coming from across East Sussex.

Twenty-six participants pitted themselves against each other and took on the discipline of four events across the day, and challenged their supporters to join in too.

The morning saw a session of New Age Kurling, facilitated by Seaford Kurlers followed by a wheelchair basketball session where participants got to have a go at a number of skills, including shooting and dribbling.

After a buffet lunch, during which supporters of the games – Community Games, NHS Sussex, the Rotary Club of Seaford, Sainsbury's Newhaven Harbour, Seaford Town Council and Wave Leisure Trust – chatted with participants and gained an insight into the kinds of activities that they would like to see in future years; the participants returned to complete a two further sports.

Table Tennis was on offer from local coach John Reeves as well as being supported by Gina Rogers from Active Sussex.

The activities were completed with the hotly anticipated and contested annual wheelchair slalom.

The day ended with a presentation of certificates of attendance from the President of the Rotary Club of Seaford, Michael Logan; Deputy Mayor of Seaford Cllr. Mark Brown and Peter Carcus, Sainsbury's PR Liaison from the Newhaven Harbour store.

Graham Amy, Friends of Searchlight said: "It is heartening to see the games happening again for the residents and friends of Searchlight. Being able to participate in a day that ensures that everyone gets to have a go at exactly what they want to do, when they want to do it is simply fantastic."

Michael Logan, President of Seaford Rotary Club said: "We are delighted that these games are able to go ahead with the support of Seaford Rotary Club again. Being able to provide the Seahaven Para Games for the area means that not only are we able to offer our community the opportunity to compete in a variety of events, but we are also able to invite local teams to challenge themselves."

Peter Crowley, Managing Director of Wave Leisure said: "We are honoured to be able to host the Seahaven Para Games for a third year at the Downs Leisure Centre. This is a continuing commitment to inspiring active lifestyles and brings physical activity to all corners of our community ensuring that participation happens in a fun and enjoyable way."

The partners have already committed to holding the games again in 2014, and have set a provisional date of Sunday 10th August.
