Plans for the £200m redevelopment of Macclesfield town centre in Cheshire have been submitted to the borough council.

The mixed-use project, a joint venture between Macclesfield Borough Council and the appointed developers Wilson Bowden, has been designed to extend the existing town centre by 500,000sq ft (46,451sq m). The extra space will accommodate an eight-screen multiplex cinema, and will be centered around a new town square lined with cafés and restaurants, and new public spaces including a new shopping street.

The mixed-use scheme, designed by ENGLE architects and planners, will also include a 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) Debenhams retail store, 50 smaller retail and leisure units including a new community hall and 55 residential units. Wilson Bowden Development manager, Emma Newman, said:"The outline planning application for Macclesfield Town Centre will show we are making better use of the site. We are delighted to provide more of a leisure focus which retains the key elements of the brief from the borough council."

Construction on the project is anticipated to begin toward the end of 2011, with completion expected in 2014. The council intend to open the cinema earlier in Autumn 2013.
