‘Wild Wild Wet’ Waterpark opens in Singapore

Local residents and visitors to Singapore will have somewhere else to go to escape the country’s tropical temperatures from now on, with the opening of Wild Wild Wet – Singapore’s newest theme park attraction.

The two-hectare waterpark, which opened on 5 June, represents a $20M (S) development for the government-run National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Club – the leisure and entertainment division of NTUC. Entertainment technology specialists, Melchers Project Management - based in Singapore, were enlisted by NTUC to design the layout and install the equipment, including all the major rides.

There are four thrill rides in the park, including the Sidewinder which defies gravity as it drops riders from a height of 13 metres in a huge float and launches them up the other side of its structure, before plopping them back to the ground.

Ular-lah is a 12.1 metre high ride, which can accommodate up to six people per raft. Complete with 360 degree full spins and bumps and dips, it simulates a real life white water rafting experience.

Waterworks is an adrenaline ride, in which riders can choose between being shot through the water in an open tube or a covered one, for greater intensity. Nearby, Tsunami is the park’s wave pool - created by Scottish based company, Murphy’s Wave – in which guests can experience the thrill of waves like those in the open sea.

For those not wanting such an extreme experience, Shiok River allows guests to float in a 335 metre winding pool around the park. What makes this lazy river special, is its inbuilt wave system which gives the operator an option to generate waves.

Children have their own area in the park, called the Professor’s Playground. The four tower modular system, manufactured by SCS Playstructure, has five different slides for children to descend from into the Fun Pool beneath. Once there, they may get even wetter, as a tipping bucket which tips 1000 litres of water over guests every five minutes, dumps its load.

A team of international performers will be at the park during its opening month, to perform stunts in the Wild Ski Show – a jet ski act in which entertainers wow the crowds with daring jumps and impressive tricks.

NTUC already runs four resorts and six clubhouses in Singapore, including the Downtown East Resort, which encompasses the four-year-old Escape Theme Park and now Wild Wild Wet. Mr Chng Hee Kok, CEO of NTUC Club says, “ Wet Wet Wild marks our continuing efforts to make Downtown East a resort of choice for Singaporeans and tourists alike. We see the water theme park as a meaningful undertaking for the club, especially in a country like Singapore, given its climate.”

Ringo Leung, general manager of Leisurequest, which will manage Wild Wild Wet, says. “The five anchor rides selected represent some of the most thrilling, and unique rides available anywhere, and will appeal to a broad spectrum of visitors, from water theme park fans to the uninitiated.”

Sponsors of Wild Wild Wet include Samsung, Yakult and Walls.
