The Young Vic theatre in London’s Waterloo district has reopened following a three-year redevelopment.
The £12.45m project has restored the main auditorium and created two smaller auditoriums for 80 and 160 guests, respectively.
Additional facilities include a split-level Cut Bar & Restaurant with an outdoor terrace as well as improved backstage facilities.
The main auditorium also features a new outer wall, which comprises 8x4ft individual hand-paintings in deep cadmium yellow on black industrial cement board encased in silver mesh.
The 180-panel installation – collaboration between artist Clem Crosby and architects Haworth Tompkins – changes with different light conditions.
Crosby said: “Usually an artist’s work, in an architectural context, is seen as an adornment, some kind of accessory or add-on to brighten up an otherwise dreary façade. My ambition was to do more than ornament the architecture. I knew that the paintings could not be subtle, they had to work within the visual noise of Waterloo.” Details: www.youngvic.org
