Work starts on Glasgow Harbour development
Building work has started on the £500m Glasgow Harbour development - a joint venture between Clydeport and Bank of Scotland.
One of the largest waterfront regeneration projects in the UK, the 30-acre site will house commercial leisure, retail and residential sectors and is likely to take ten years to complete.
The retail and leisure districts, scheduled to open in 2004, will have 450,000sq feet of shops, bars, restaurants, health and fitness clubs and a new Museum of Transport. Areas between all the sectors on the site will be inter-linked with a covered park connecting the commercial retail and leisure areas.
A link to the city centre has been proposed using a rapid light transport system or European-style tram, linking the harbour to the centre rail stations and main shopping streets. The council supports the plan, saying it will 'boost the image of the city sought by the riverside regeneration.'
Euan Jamieson, managing director of Glasgow Harbour, said: 'This development is unique, combining the benefits of living in both the West End and on the waterfront. It now won't be long before people are able to enjoy a lifestyle that has never been seen in Glasgow before, a modern urban community where people can live, work and relax.'
The masterplan for the project was passed by the council and rubberstamped by the Scottish Executive in June 2001. Details: www.glasgowharbour.com or tel +44 (0)141 241 8585k
