The USS Missouri, or Mighty Mo as it’s nicknamed, is to undergo an US$18m (£11.2m, 12.2m euro) revamp.
The floating museum based in Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, US, will be released from its moorings and moved into dry dock for the first time in 11 years for the makeover, which is being funded by The Department of Defense (US$10m) and the USS Missouri Memorial Association.
Work to be carried out will include sandblasting, hull inspection, replacement of rusted steel, instalment of a new system to monitor corrosion inside the hold and repainting.
The 65-year-old ship, which was decommissioned in 1992, was the location for a Japanese delegation to officially end hostilities in Tokyo Bay during World War II. The ship has also been used in movies such as Pearl Harbor and Under Siege and for Cher’s famous If I Could Turn Back Time video.
The revamp is expected to be completed by 7 January next year and the ship will go on tour on 29 January.
