The Clissold Leisure Centre in Hackney, London, has finally reopened after more than four years of remedial work.
The centre was originally intended to cost around £7m to complete, but a number of design problems caused the project to be both 18 months late and over budget.
The centre finally opened in February in 2002, at a cost of £34m, to great fanfare. After a brief time of operation, however, severe design problems were again found and the centre was closed for a complete redevelopment in November 2003.
Following a lengthy public consultation, the “serious faults” have been rectified, and new features added, such as a brand new toddler pool, as well as improved disability access, reception area and crèche.
The centre will be operated by Greenwich Leisure.
