AI firm Midjourney enters wellness with spa, fitness and body scanning concept

The Midjourney Spa will open with ultrasonic Midjourney Scanners
The scanners will take 3D maps of guests' bodies in 60 seconds when they are in a pool
Over time, guests will be able to track their health based on the scans
Midjourney aims to have more than 50,000 scanners worldwide by 2031
As AI and wellness technologies continue to evolve, there is an opportunity to harness these innovations thoughtfully, balancing progress with the rituals, relationships and emotional experiences that make wellness truly transformative

TLee Spas and Wellness has revealed the design for a wellness destination concept for AI company Midjourney, that blurs the boundaries between spa, fitness and preventative healthcare, with the goal of improving public health.

Midjourney is a generative AI research company known for offering its users a way to create detailed stylised images and videos from text descriptions via a chat-style online platform. It is a community-backed research lab without investors.

The 24,000sq ft flagship Midjourney Spa is due to open at the end of 2027 at 300 Grant Avenue in San Francisco, US. The company plans to scale the concept to more cities in 2028.

Spread across four floors, the San Francisco destination will offer classic spa experiences such as a thermal circuit with hot tubs, saunas and plunge pools as well as other wellness-focused amenities, such as a gym and fitness studio, a multi-purpose live music room, group tea tastings and touchless longevity treatments.

Midjourney Scanners

Midjourney has expanded into healthcare, with the creation of its Midjourney Medical division. This division is creating a body scanner that is expected to provide 3D ultrasonic CT imaging quickly within a wellness setting.

Midjourney believes that with enough early imaging, the world could avoid 30 per cent of all deaths and 50 per cent of all healthcare costs.

At the centre of the new facility will be nine of these full-body Midjourney Scanners that have been developed by the company’s team of engineers.

Guests will walk onto a platform in shallow water, which descends like a lift into a private pool to be scanned by rings of underwater sensors.

The devices will provide noninvasive ultrasound imaging of the body using sound waves to visualise organ and tissue segmentation plus structural imaging of the torso and legs.

The 3D mapping will be accurate to a fraction of a milimetre, similar to an MRI, but the generation of the images will be quicker – nearly 100 times the speed. Midjourney says it wants the scanning to take no more than 60 seconds. The technology requires enormous computational power, producing terabytes of data each second.

The aim is to help guests track changes to their bodies over time and encourage them to adopt proactive preventative behaviours to improve their health. By using the scanners regularly, they will be able to build a library of data about their own health.

The new facility will be targeted at the general public and while the pricing model is still to be decided, Midjourney plans to make its facilities affordable and accessible. The company suggests the spa will eventually be available 24/7.

David Holz, founder and CEO of Midjourney, said: “The Midjourney Spa will feature hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges and cosy rooms filled with pools of golden light that softly scan your body. It’s designed as a place you genuinely want to go, alone or with friends. The scans become almost incidental and you barely think about them when visiting.”

Jeanine Allpress-Cliffe, president and MD of TLee Spas and Wellness, told Spa Business that Midjourney “plans to launch as a wellness-focused product, offering body-composition tracking rather than diagnostic imaging, since broader medical use would require regulatory approval.”

Midjourney plans to achieve FDA approval for increased diagnostics in the future and its goal is to have more than 50,000 scanners worldwide by 2031. The company says this will provide them with a scanning capacity of one billion scans per month, in order to cover a large percentage of the global population or regular, monthly scans to one billion people.

The design

TLee Spas collaborated with Basalt, the company that created Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon, as well as San Francisco-based architects Rapt Studio to create a blended environment with organic forms and tech-driven experiences.

The space will feature soft golden light, water features and natural materials, while live music will play.

Allpress-Cliffe said: “The future of wellness has moved beyond the spa experience, towards a more holistic, community-driven approach. There is a need for spaces where people can gather, reconnect and experience wellbeing through the intersection of science, hospitality, nature and meaningful connection.

“As AI and wellness technologies continue to evolve, there is an opportunity to harness these innovations thoughtfully, balancing progress with the rituals, relationships and emotional experiences that make wellness truly transformative,” she continued. “Working with the Midjourney team allowed us to think beyond traditional boundaries and blur the lines between technology, AI and the spa experience. We leaned into the concept of ‘frequency as medicine’ and how this is being blended into so many aspects of a spa environment, from sound to light, to water and design, evoking a fully supported sensory experience. Midjourney Spa is an innovative blend of what it means to be human in an AI-driven world.”
