Soneva Fushi to be carbon-free by 2010
Resort and spa operator Six Senses is to implement a new carbon emissions strategy at its flagship property, Soneva Fushi in the Maldives, which is intended to make it carbon-neutral by 2008 and carbon-free by 2010.
Soneva Fushi is already a key contributor to the Six Senses Carbon Offset Fund, which supports the international Converging World initiative.
This has been founded to establish alternative energy production methods – such as wind farms – in developing countries, before they become dependent on energy sourced from fossil fuels.
In addition, since early 2005, UK-based environmental engineering and design consultancy XCO2 has been working with Six Senses to help the operator move towards powering Soneva Fushi using only carbon-free energy.
Initiatives include the use of cutting-edge energy-saving technology; solar, tidal and wave power; and energy-efficient architectural design. The use of biodiesel is being considered.
