RFU 'unclear' over Coventry RFC status
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced that it is "unclear" over the current legal status of Coventry Rugby Football Club (CRFC), following reports the club had entered voluntary liquidation.
Representatives from the national governing body met with the Championship club's president Peter Rossborough after owner Andrew Green announced his intention to put CRFC into Creditors Voluntary Liquidation. However, the RFU has revealed that the club will be forced to fulfil its fixture against Bedford Blues on 4 December until it is legally confirmed that the club has ceased to trade.
The fixture will be played at the city's Ricoh Arena after CRFC players agreed to fulfil against Bedford Blues, while club shareholders Coventry City Council and the Alan Edward Higgs Charity have agreed to provide support until its future is resolved. RFU chief executive Francis Baron said: "We are very keen to do whatever we can to maintain rugby in Coventry where there is a great history and tradition. We are hopeful that Peter and other interested parties can put in place a plan of action that assures the legal status of the club and can deliver long term certainty to the club."
