Newcastle youth facility plans scrapped

Newcastle City Council (NCC) has confirmed that it will not appeal against a Department of Education decision to withdraw National Lottery support for the city's Myplace plans.
A new youth facility had been proposed for the centre of Newcastle, but the government had provisionally pulled funding over concerns about the financial viability of the scheme. NCC leader elect Nick Forbes said: "I have concluded that in the current economic environment there are too many uncertainties over the financial sustainability of the project for us to back it.
"I believe it is important for the new administration to show leadership and to give officers of the council clarity on this issue quickly and decisively."
