A new report released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK has taken a theme of societal wellbeing for 2008.
The ‘state of the nation’ report indicates that, on average, over the past 30 years, Britons have enjoyed a steady improvement in their standard of living and are also healthier.
It indicates that life expectancy stood at 77 for males and 82 for females in 2006, compared with 69 for males and 75 for females in 1971. The mortality rate for circulatory diseases such as stroke also saw a marked decline over the same period.
Social Trends reports compile a wide range of information from different sources on a number of aspects of British society, including health, wealth, education, expenditure and the labour market.
The ONS is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial department reporting directly to the British Parliament. Details: statistics.gov.uk
