New approach for Shropshire leisure facilities
Shropshire Council has announced that plans to seek an external operator to run five of its leisure facilities will be discussed on 16 March.
A commercially confidential report is to go before the council's cabinet, which will call for the start of a tendering process in a bid to reduce the burden on taxpayers. Facilities to be affected by the new approach include Oswestry Leisure Centre, Whitchurch Swimming Centre, Market Drayton Leisure Centre and Bridgnorth Leisure Centre.
Shrewsbury Sports Village and Indoor Bowls Hall is the fifth venue which could be run by an external operator as early as April 2012 if the proposal is approved. Shropshire Council cabinet member for culture and leisure Steve Charmley said: "We cannot ignore the fact that our local communities could benefit more from some of these facilities being provided by somebody other than the council.
"Maintaining the status quo is clearly not an option, if we are to continue to keep these centres open and flourishing in the future."
