New Welsh museum reaches scoping study stage
Campaigners for a new National Museum of Pre-History, to be situated in Flintshire, north Wales, have revealed that their initial proposals have now progressed to a scoping study stage.
The museum proposals, dubbed The Gold Cape Project, have received support from a variety of Welsh business and tourism sources who believe that a new, dynamic attraction could have a dramatic impact on tourism and visitor figures for the whole north Wales region.
The scoping study would determine the preliminary feasibility of a museum before a more advanced study could take place.
If the scoping and feasibility studies are successful, elements such as market conditions, the environment and the level of support available for the museum initiative could be closely assessed before the project continues to the next stage of pre-development.
Campaigners in Mold, Flintshire are pushing for a pre-history focus for the museum as it could then potentially include a priceless Bronze Age gold cape, locally referred to as the Mold Cape. Although the gold cape was originally discovered in Mold, it is currently part of a museum collection in London.
The new museum campaign has received support from the Welsh Development Agency, the Welsh Tourist Board and the local Flintshire council.
Helen Talfryn Walters of the National Museums & Galleries of Wales, which currently operates eight museum sites around Wales udner a partnership scheme, said: "We're always very keen to create links with other regional museums, extend our partnership scheme and widen the accessibility of our collections."
