NI consultation into minimum pricing plans
Consultation on plans for a minimum price of alcohol in Northern Ireland has been unveiled by social development minister Alex Attwood and health minister Michael McGimpsey.
The two ministers are proposing the introduction of a minimum price between 40p and 70p per unit of alcohol, although an exact price is yet to be determined. It forms part of the Northern Ireland Executive's bid to cut binge drinking and reduce anti-social behaviour caused by excessive use of alcohol.
Attwood said: "I believe there is a strong weight of evidence for introducing minimum pricing as a further tool for tackling the harm of alcohol misuse in our society."
