London Mayor lifts London Living Wage to £7.45
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has increased the Living Wage for London to £7.45 per hour – nearly 35 per cent higher than the national minimum wage (£5.52) set by government.
Although not enforceable by law, employers within the capital are encouraged to match the level set by the mayor's office. Trade unions and the TUC were quick to welcome the decision, although, due to the current economic climate, it remains to be seen how many operators are willing to increase staff costs.Megan Dobney, regional secretary for the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in London, said: "In challenging economic times low paid Londoners are struggling to meet their everyday living costs and in-work poverty remains an unacceptable fact for too many.
"The mayor was absolutely right to call on all employers in London to pay a living wage."
