Local authority approves Wildlife Trust loan
Huntingdonshire District Council has approved in principle a loan of up to £1.2m towards the Great Fen Project - one of the UK's largest habitat restoration projects.
The scheme is being managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough, which aims to create a new sustainable fenland landscape. Subject to certain terms and conditions, the loan will help the trust to acquire the leasehold of land identified as part of the masterplan for the Great Fen Project, with some freehold land already owned.
According to a report put before the council's cabinet on 18 March, "the trust expects to complete the purchase by October and, by then, it may be clearer on the results of further fundraising or grant submissions which could reduce the loan amount and the fall-back number of years for the agreement".
