Leisure Connection launches third Inclusive Fitness Initiative
Leisure Connection has launched the third official Inclusive Fitness Initiative at its Swan Centre for Leisure in Berwick Upon Tweed.
The centre's gym has been refurbished to accommodate disabled users with six new pieces of equipment that can be used by both able and disabled people being installed.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, by October 2004 all fitness facility providers will be required to make facilities accessible for disabled exercisers. In response to this, the English Federation for Disability Sport (EFDS) set up an initiative to promote inclusion in council-run sites.
The Swan Centre was awarded £30,000 by the EFDS as part of the initiative.
Now that redevelopment of the site is complete, YMCAfit will be training staff at the centre to make the atmosphere more welcoming for people with disabilities.
Fitness instructors will also learn how to provide assessments and develop exercise programmes for disabled users.
Leisure Connection currently operates 120 facilities on behalf of local authorities, and is hoping to deliver inclusive fitness provision in other sites in the near future. Details: +44 (0)1582 794023
