Leeds leisure centres get go-ahead
Proposals to build two new leisure centres in Armley and Morley, Leeds, have got the green light by the DCMS. Contractors Interserve have also been appointed to build and eventually operate the centres on a 25-year contract.
The developments, totaling £33m, are being funded through the Private Finance Initiative and the DCMS have approved credits worth £30m. This will cover capital costs of £27m and maintenance expenses of £3m.
The new Armley Leisure Centre will be built on land adjacent to the current centre and will feature a hydrotherapy pool, a 100-station Bodyline gym, a four-court sports hall, a two-court sports hall, a dance studio and a bar/café. The current leisure centre will remain open during the first phase of construction and will close in approximately 12 months.
At Morley, the new centre will also be built on a site of the current centre and will host a 150-station Bodyline gym, six-court and four-court sports halls, a multi-activity hall, a dance studio and a bar/café. The current Morley Leisure centre closed in July and will be demolished to make way for the new facilities.
Both centres will have 25m swimming pools and 10m learner pools.
Executive member for leisure John Procter, hopes the centres will attract new users. “Improving our leisure facilities is vital in ensuring better health and fitness, and improved quality of life in all our communities, said Procter.
“The new centres will be modern, accessible, welcoming and a real asset to the city for many years to come."
The centres are expected to open in summer 2010.
