Iconic painting returns to Norwich
Tourism minister Barbara Follet has announced that a historic landscape painting by artist Thomas Gainsborough is to form part of Norwich Castle Museum's permanent collection in Norfolk.
Open Landscape with Milkmaid and Cows, Donkeys, Plough Team and Church, Farmhouse and Barn among Trees will be exhibited at the museum after it was accepted in lieu of £700,000 inheritance tax as part of a government initiative. Under the terms of the Acceptance in Lieu Scheme, which is administered by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), items of historic or artistic importance can be donated to museums and galleries as a means of satisfying inheritance tax liability.
