Gormley's proposal, called One and Other, will see members of public occupy the plinth for 100 consecutive days, with each person standing on the plinth for one hour.
Shonibare's Nelson's Ship in a Bottle will see a scale replica of Nelson's ship, HMS Victory, being placed on the plinth inside a giant glass bottle.
The artist's were commissioned by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
