Final green light for Isles of Scilly scheme
Plans for the creation of a new sea link between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have received the final statutory planning go-ahead from councillors.
Cornwall Council's strategic planning committee signed off the proposals to build a sea wall in Penzance after the secretary of state decided not to call in the application. It had been forecast that doing nothing to preserve the sea link between the islands and the mainland would have resulted in a net loss of 32,000 visitors to Scilly compared with 2003.
Estimates also predicted that providing a new ferry link would help to increase visitor spending by £2.6m by 2020. Graeme Hicks, cabinet member for highways and transportation at Cornwall Council, said: "We are now very much looking forward to overcoming the final hurdle by securing funding from central government."
