Emerging Asian markets will be tourism's 'bread and butter'
Peter de Jong, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has said the emerging economies of China and India are phenomenal and should be the travel and tourism industries' 'bread and butter' for the next 20 years.
'In Asia, we have a great deal of intra-regional travellers who are set to venture further afield in the very near future,' he said.
'Because the populations of India and China are so huge, a modest percentage growth in international travel could have a significant impact on the rest of the world.'
De Jong will be expanding on this topic by moderating the emerging economies breakout session at the third Global Travel and Tourism Summit, set to take place in Vilamoura, Portugal from 15-17 May.
The summit, organised by the World Travel and Tourism council, aims to help the travel and tourism industry come together to rebuild confidence in the face of war, terrorism, disease and economic slowdown. It also intends to build a vision of 'new tourism' and initiate a strategy to achieve it.
Other speakers include the president and prime minister of Portugal; chair and CEO of Marriot International, Bill Marriot and Six Continents chair, Sir Ian Prosser. Details: www.wttc.org
