Cycle hire scheme planned for Belfast
A public cycle hire scheme could be introduced in Belfast after Northern Ireland transport minister Conor Murphy announced the launch of a new project to explore the proposals.
The Department for Regional Development will work in partnership with Belfast City Council and the Strategic Investment Board to examine the feasibility of implementing the initiative. Plans for the introduction of a public cycle hire service aim to capitalise on the success of similar schemes in cities across Europe, including the 'dublinbikes' initiative launched in Dublin, Ireland, in 2009.
Murphy said: "The setting up of a joint project to examine the feasibility and options for introducing a public bike hire scheme in Belfast, is a demonstration of my commitment to encouraging cycling in the city."
