Cultural leisure centre debuts in Renaissance-era Valencian convent
A former nunnery in Plaza Portal Nou, Valencia that dates back to Renaissance times has re-opened as an arts and leisure venue.
Renovated by designer Francesc Rifé and architect Paco Jurado, The Convent Carmen Valencia – erstwhile the 400-year-old convent of Saint Jose and Saint Theresa – now includes a garden restaurant headed by Michelin-star chef Miguel Ángel Mayor as well as event spaces for film showings, musical performances, debates, and art exhibitions.
The newly-launched venue, which is being billed as an "atypical" way to restore Valencia’s architectural heritage, is set to expand further in 2020, when it becomes home to a 50-room hotel.
