Plans for a new £10.9m leisure facility at Rankin Park, Greenock, are set to be reconsidered as part of the local authority's wider efforts to cut spending.

Current proposals would see the sports and library complex boast an eight-court sports hall; a 48-station gym; a 160sq m (1,722sq ft) dance studio; and four covered five-a-side pitches. The facility would replace the existing Nelson Street Sports Centre, but Inverclyde Council is now looking to make a number of major changes to the proposals.

A report to go before councillors on 20 January now calls for the Nelson Street venue to be retained and upgraded. Meanwhile, Rankin Park would receive a new covered five-a-side football facility at a cost of £2.25m part-funded by Inverclyde Leisure, as well as a £1.4m grass pitch and pavilion.

The report said: "The Rankin Park development involves the largest level of planned investment, which has not yet been committed and therefore provides a significant opportunity to review the level of proposed investment." Rankin Park was one of a number of leisure schemes that formed part of the council's £22.7m investment in leisure announced in 2009.
