Council approves Bournemouth coastline plans
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) has approved a new management strategy that has been drawn up to protect the Dorset resort's coast for the next 100 years.
Members of the cabinet approved the Shoreline Management Plan on 23 June, which outlines a number of protection policies for a stretch of coast between Hurst Spit to Durlston Head. The new plan divides the coastline into individual policy units, with one of four policies applied to each area, such as maintaining or upgrading the level of protection or building new defences seaward of existing ones.
Realignment of the shoreline with management to control movement and no active intervention comprise the two other policy units, with the majority of coastline to benefit from maintained or upgraded defences. BBC cabinet member for environment and transport Robert Lawton said: "In Bournemouth we are proposing to do all we can to ensure that we protect our beautiful coastline for our future generations and leave a lasting legacy."
