Clay Cross regeneration project underway
Work has started on a major multi-million pound regeneration scheme in Clay Cross, which is designed to transform the former Derbyshire mining town.
The first phase of the £22m New Bridge Street project will see new retail units, a Tesco superstore, a bus station and a link road created, while a health centre is planned as part of later stages. GMI Property Company is working in partnership with Clay Cross Parish Council and North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC) on the project, which has received £9.2m from the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and the Homes and Communities Agency.
Meanwhile, developer Maximus is working on a scheme to transform the former Biwater Works - now called Silkston - to deliver a mixed-use development, including a 60-bedroom hotel and a play area. EMDA's executive director of regeneration, Diana Gilhespy, said: "Our investment is helping to breathe new life into this former mining town so that people in the area can enjoy new employment opportunities, an improved environment and better local facilities."
