Calderdale Council in West Yorkshire has announced that it will not be opening the Brighouse swimming pool, following a report which estimated repair costs of nearly £1m.

The pool, which is more than 100 years old, was closed in June after debris and glass were found to be falling into the water from the roof.

A report commissioned by the council has found extensive work is required to update the faciliity, and concluded that even with the maintenance, the pool's long term future was far from secure.

A new pool is being planned at the nearby Sugden's Mill site, but the scheme is mired in controversy over ownership of the land and the nature of a mixed-use development.

Calderdale Council's cabinet member for community services, Amanda Byrne, said: "It would be irresponsible to spend nearly £1m keeping open a pool which has reached the end of its useful life, particularly when we want to provide a brand new pool in the town.

"It is now even more important for the people of Brighouse that the Sugden's Mill development is resolved quickly so we can get on with providing a new pool."
