BMA Scotland has published a five-point plan to tackle the increasing levels of alcohol misuse.
The action plan, published on the opening day of the BMA’s annual UK conference this week, comes as a report revealed that alcohol kills six people everyday in Scotland.
The plan calls upon the Scottish Executive to end discounting alcohol drinks for sale in off licences and supermarkets; to undertake research into pricing mechanisms; to end sponsorship of sporting and entertainment events; to legislate for alcohol labelling and to reduce the drink driving limit from 80mg to 50mg.
According to the BMA, discounted alcohol sales have in some cases resulted in alcohol being cheaper to buy than a bottle of water, while reducing the drink drive limit could prevent up to 65 deaths a year.
Dr Peter Terry, chair of BMA in Scotland said: “Our action plan sets out a range of measures that the Scottish Executive can take forward as part of a wider strategy.
“Increasing price is one part of a strategy that can deter children from purchasing alcohol.”
