April launch for Hull Truck's new venue
Hull Truck, a theatre company originally founded in 1971 as a touring organisation, has announced that its new £15m theatre is to open on 23 April after more than two years in development.
The new venue was designed by Wright and Wright architects, and was built by Quarmby Construction. It will replace the company's existing Spring Street premises, which has housed Hull Truck Theatre since 1983. Facilities at the new theatre include a 440-seat main auditorium and a 134-seat studio theatre, doubling the capacity of the Spring Street venue. Café-bars and large foyer spaces have also been created in a bid to establish the venue as a meeting place.
The company has raised £14.7m towards the project, with support provided by Arts Council England, Hull City Council, the European Regional Development Fund and the government agency Yorkshire Forward. John Godber, joint artistic director at Hull Truck, said: "To see the building coming together is a dream come true – not only for me, but for everyone at Hull Truck. It will mean that we finally have a home commensurate with the standard and reputation of the company."
