Activity Centre opens cave system

Work has been completed on one of the world's biggest man-made cave systems in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The Adventure Learning Park features more than 200 metres of tunnels and passageways and a cavern which is 9.5 metres long, 4.5 metres wide and eight metres high.
The complex, which is one of only a few man-made, realistic caves in the world, also incorporates an 8 metre waterfall.The facility has been designed so that it is suitable for climbing and abseiling as well as caving.
The centre’s three caving passages will be pumped with water, terminating in a sump or egress pond which users must swim through to leave the tunnel system.
The centre has been designed to be used by both the public as well as the venue for specialist training.
Stephen Dickson, Belfast Activity Centre director said: “Belfast Adventure Learning Park is a flagship project the like of which has never been built before.
“The cave is a significant investment as we develop a world class recreation and education centre and is already in demand from organisations including Northern Ireland’s Fire Service Urban Search and Rescue Unit.
“The Search and Rescue Dogs Association also recently tested their skills in the cave in case they are called to an emergency.”
The centre was designed by civil and structural engineering consultants Paul Waite Associates with support from climbing wall experts Entre-Prises.
