50-year vision to restore England's wetlands

An alliance between government agencies and conservation groups has been launched in order to create, restore and protect areas of wetland across England.
The Wetland Vision Partnership has set out a 50-year plan that it says is crucial to "meet the challenges of the future". Increasing pressure on land use for home and industry, as well as a changing climate, has seen 90 per cent of England's wetlands disappear in the last 1,000 years. Now, say conservationists, large areas of wetlands will need to be created in order to protect wildlife and safeguard heritage. One of the agencies involved in the Partnership, Natural England, will be providing up to £2m per year over the next three years with the aim of creating and restoring wetlands in a number of areas, including the Great Fen Project in Cambridgeshire, which aims to create 3,700 hectares of new wetland. "If we invest in wetland, we will be richly rewarded," said Carrie Hume, Wetland Vision project manager. "In the right places, wetlands provide havens for wildlife and fantastic places for people to visit and enjoy." The Wetland Vision partners include the RSPB, The Wildlife Trusts, Natural England, the Environment Agency and English Heritage.An alliance between government agencies and conservation groups has been launched in order to create, restore and protect areas of wetland across England.
