£400m Spitalfields site is complete
A regeneration project in east London which cost an estimated £400m to complete will officially open on 6 October.
Called Bishops Square and located within the capital’s Spitalfields area, the multi-use site features a mixture of residential and office space alongside extensive community facilities, restaurants and public spaces.
A 774,000sq ft (71,900sq m) building forms the centrepiece of the project. Designed by architects Foster and Partners, the building will be let to international lawyers Allen & Overy.
In its entirety, the redevelopment has created more than four acres of public space around Bishops Square – larger than the size of the piazza in Covent Garden.
The space includes performance areas, mature trees, water features and a selection of historical artefacts. The Spitalfields Development Group (SDG), a subsidiary of the Hammerson property group, was responsible for the project and has developed a three year arts programme.
A number of permanent and temporary art exhibits will also be installed on site, including a fibre optic floor from Free Form Arts.
Chief executive of SDG, Mike Bear, said: “There has been a dramatic transformation of the Spitalfields area and we believe it now rivals any retail and leisure destination in the UK.” Details: www.spitalfields.co.uk
