Reimagining leisure centres: Layrd Design transforms Everybody Health & Leisure’s Macclesfield gym
Everybody Health & Leisure has unveiled a stunning transformation of its Macclesfield leisure centre, created in partnership with Layrd Design, a leading commercial interior design studio.
The newly renovated gym, which opened on 18 December, offers members a modern and inspiring fitness space. The 520sq m facility showcases how thoughtful design can create an engaging, inclusive fitness environment that appeals to members across generations.
Narrowing the gap in quality between private and public facilities, this gym makes a luxury wellness experience more accessible and desirable, setting a new standard for the leisure centre experience.
The transformation introduces a "box concept" – a room-within-a-room approach that creates distinct training zones without traditional walls. This maintains an open, welcoming atmosphere while providing privacy and comfort for different workout styles and experience levels.
Layrd’s innovative approach focused on creating a space that is not only functional but also visually appealing.
The design, which is set to become a blueprint for future projects, features several key features, including:
• A sophisticated material palette that establishes a strong identity beyond typical branded elements that would become synonymous with the Everybody Health & Leisure brand.• Intuitive navigation through creative use of lighting, flooring and ceiling features, eliminating the need for traditional signage.
• A carefully zoned layout that optimises space for different activities, with distinct cardio, strength training and functional fitness areas.
“Macclesfield really elevates the game for leisure centres; offering a boutique-style experience to the masses,” said Gina Clarke, head of gym design at Layrd.
“It asks us to re-evaluate our expectations of the traditional leisure centre, and demonstrates how, with the right investment, they can become stylish wellness centres for the whole community.”
