Fitness sector debates cancer testing role
Experts from the UK's health and fitness industry have rejected a call for gyms to carry out mouth swab tests in order to predict an individual's chances of contracting cancer.
Professor Karol Sikora, a renowned British oncologist, told the Evening Standard in December that such tests could help reduce lifestyle cancers related to smoking or drinking.
Nuffield Health head of physiology Chris Jones told Health Club Management that introducing cancer screening in gyms would put pressure on fitness instructors.
However, Jones said there was potential for health clubs to offer more services and support, as well as linking with the medical sector, in order to help with disease prevention.
Meanwhile, Fitness Industry Association CEO David Stalker also said the sector could make a positive contribution by outlining members' lifestyle risk factors.
Jones and Stalker were among those to discuss the issue as part of the Talkback feature in the latest Health Club Management magazine. To read more, see 2012 Issue 3, p28
