Fire 'destroys' St Albans leisure facility

St Albans City and District Council (SACDC) has confirmed that a fire at Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre in the early hours of 10 August has "destroyed most of the building".
According to a council spokesperson, the fire is not believed to be connected with the public order disturbances across the country and started "well after" an adjacent nightclub shut. SACDC portfolio for sports, leisure and heritage Mike Wakely said: "Council officers have been on site since early this morning, supporting police and fire officers, assessing the damage and securing the site."
