£4.74m revamp for Birmingham sports centre
Birmingham's Aston University has announced that work is due to commence next month on a major £4.74m refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Woodcock Sports Centre.
The venue, which boasts one of the city's oldest operational swimming pools, will benefit from an extended gym space, improved changing facilities and a purpose-built martial arts and dance studio. Linford Building has been appointed to deliver the structural renovation and refurbishment part of the scheme, designed by Warwick-based Robothams Architects and project managed by Edward Finch Partnership.
The existing swimming pool - originally known as the First Class pool - and the sports hall will be retained as part of the refurbishment, which is due to be completed by September 2011. Aston University's director of campus services Mike Kirkman said: "The centre serves students, staff and the surrounding community and is a valuable community resource as it is the only public swimming facility in the city centre area of Birmingham."
The university took over responsibility for the Woodcock facility in 1980 from Birmingham City Council. The venue was listed two years later.
