New from the company which introduced Power Plate acceleration training is the Power Plate® powerBIKE, a mechanical stationary bike with integrated vibration technology.

The new machine features a patent-pending pedal and crank system which delivers vibrations through the pedals as it is ridden. These vibrations are designed to provide an additional stimulus for a more challenging workout, but they also activate the stretch reflex in the muscles, so users are better able to cope with the increased intensity.

Using pedal power alone to generate the vibrations, the powerBIKE requires no electrical supply. It also offers the option of switching off the vibration function, effectively providing two fitness bikes in one. Research by the University of Greenwich's Centre for Sports Science and Human Performance on the effects of the new technology indicates an increase of 167 per cent in muscle activity for the quadriceps, 144 per cent for the hamstrings, and 138 per cent for the glutes - when pedalling at 90PRM and 30Hz vibration - when compared to muscle activity at the same RPM with no vibration.

powerBIKE sees its consumer launch in June, with the commercial launch - complemented by education and training packages to run alongside it within clubs - expected by the end of the year.
